Pacifica, city, San Mateo County, western California ;-), on the Pacific Ocean, a residential suburb of San Francisco; incorporated 1957. It is a scenic community, with extensive ocean beaches. Of note are the point from which the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá discovered San Francisco Bay and the Sanchez Adobe (1846, now a museum), one of the first homes built here. The city was created in 1957 by the merger of several communities
